Falls of the James
- "I can't tell you how great my experience was...the day and the weather were just perfect. I had a chance to swim during the first part of the trip. Because of inexperienced people like me and my friends, a couple of us lost balance and fell in the water during one of the class 4 rapids...and our guides Mike and Ryan were calm and composed and helped us get back on the boat.!"
- "Went rafting on the James River at 12 feet high water, awesome experience. Had a friend from Toronto visiting Richmond, and he was thrilled to see the adventurous side of our city. Well managed, friendly guides ( High five to Mike ).... overall a tremendous value, so we will be back again!"
Riverside Outfitters’ signature whitewater rafting trip down the Falls of the James in Richmond’s James River Park System. It combines the Upper and Lower sections of the river for a longer rafting experience. Tackle the only Class II – Class IV white water rapids running through a major U.S. city…right in your own backyard. See why Outside Magazine named Richmond the Best River Town in the U.S. We’ll put-in between the Pony Pasture and Reedy Creek sections of the park and get the chance to see Bald Eagles, Great Blue Herons, Turtles and other wildlife friends as we enjoy a gourmet lunch on one of the many river islands. Then, as we turn the corner at Belle Isle, we’ll emerge from what seems like a secluded forest into the skyline of downtown Richmond. Get ready to shoot the big-water and surf the big waves! We’ll end the trip at the 14th St. white water takeout at the bottom of historic Shockoe Slip…then it’s back to the Riverside Outfitters shop– more like turn-of-the-century farm house– for a beverage and some front porch sittin’…a great way to end a great trip! Exact trip duration will depend on water level and speed of current…we will be on the water for approx. 3-4 hours.
This trip is seasonal and typically is offered April-June.
Rafters must be at least 10 years old (with parent or guardian) and confident swimming in moving water. Minimum age might vary by water level land other conditions.
